It's a bit dated, but this infographic created by Time magazine a few years ago shows how much mostly empty space there is in this country. Both the graphic and the interactive flash version on the website give a good deal of information on population density from our last census [best viewed large].

I wonder if this picture will change much with 1) the 2010 census and 2) the super killer yellowstone caldera, which could wipe out America's west any ol' time now.
Oh, whichever comes first, we'll probably find out by the end of the year anyway.
